How to choose wall art that actually fits your room

Most wall art disappoints for one of four reasons: it's the wrong size, it clashes with the room's colors, its style fights the room's style, or it's hung badly. Here's how to get each one right.

1. Get the size right first

Undersized art is the most common mistake — a small frame floating on a big wall looks like an afterthought. Two rules of thumb:

  • Over furniture (a sofa, bed, or sideboard), art should span roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of the furniture's width.
  • On an open wall, aim to fill half to two-thirds of the visible wall area, keeping generous breathing room on all sides.

For reference, a 50×70 cm print works well above a desk or in a hallway, 60×80 cm suits most sofas and beds, and 60×90 cm can anchor a larger living-room wall.

2. Pull colors from the room — don't match them exactly

Art that repeats one or two of your room's existing accent colors feels intentional. Art that matches everything disappears into the wall. The sweet spot: pick up a secondary color from your space (a cushion, a rug, the wood tones) and let the artwork introduce one new color the room doesn't have yet.

This is exactly what Placed automates — it reads the dominant colors and lighting from a photo of your room and generates artwork that harmonizes with them rather than copying them.

3. Match the mood, not just the style

A minimalist room doesn't strictly need minimalist art — but the energy should agree. Calm bedrooms suit soft, low-contrast pieces (watercolor, landscape, botanical). Living rooms can carry bolder work (abstract, geometric, contemporary). High-personality spaces — a home office, a teenager's room, a gaming corner — are where saturated styles like cyberpunk shine.

4. Hang it at the right height

Galleries hang art with its center at about 145–155 cm from the floor — roughly eye level. Above furniture, leave 15–25 cm between the furniture and the frame's bottom edge. Hanging too high is the second most common mistake after going too small.

5. Preview before you commit

The reason art buying feels risky is that you can't picture the result. That's the problem Placed exists to solve: upload a photo of your room, generate art matched to it, and drag it around your actual wall — at scale — before ordering a print. If it doesn't look right in the preview, it's free to try again.
